FAQ

When and how old were you when you started your blog?  November of 2008.  I was 14 years old.

How did you come up with the title for your blog?  I’ve always loved the word drifter.  And I wanted another word that would make an alliteration.  So after much brainstorming, I came up with gypsy.

What kind of camera/lens do you use?  Canon 5d mark II with a 50mm f/1.4 lens and 28mm f/1.8 lens (primarily the 50mm though!)

Who takes your pictures?  My mom, unless otherwise stated.

Do you edit your own photos?  And if so, what software program do you use?  Yes, I do.  I use Photoshop CS4.

How long does it take you to write a blog post?  It varies!  If I have a specific idea in mind, it can take as little as 1 hour.  If I’m working on a more involved post, like an outfit post or something else that requires photo editing, it can take a few hours, and sometimes days, to compile.

Are you currently in school?  Yes, I attend the Savannah College of Art and Design.  I am working toward completing my BFA in Graphic Design and minoring in photography.

Wait, so if you go to SCAD, how are you living in the Bay Area?  I am currently enrolled at SCAD via their eLearning program, which enables me to stay in the San Francisco Bay Area.

You’re also a freelance photographer.  Where can I view your online portfolio?  Also, are you available to hire?  Yes, I am.  You can view my online portfolio here.  I am available to hire for lookbooks, editorials, and the like.  If you are interested in my photographic services, please get in touch with me at hello@micaelahoo.com.

How do you manage your time?  I am and always have been a morning person, so I try to get all my chores done in the morning, so I can relax in the afternoon.  Also, I get anxious and stressed out very easily, so I hate procrastinating and usually get things done WAY in advance.  It’s all a constant work in progress, though!

Is your family supportive of your blog?  Yes, they are.

What’s your family like?  Are they also creative?  Much of my family is creative, but in different ways.  For instance, my mom likes to paint, while my dad likes architecture.

Have you always lived in the Bay Area?  No, my family and I moved to the Bay Area in July of 2007.  Previously we had lived in Connecticut.

Do you make money from blogging?  Yes, all of the sponsors you see on the right sidebar pay for their monthly ad.  Occasionally, stores send me items to review on this blog.  I only blog about items that I would purchase for myself and would recommend to others.

I’m interested in advertising on your blog.  That’s great!  Please visit the sponsorship page and email me at ads@drifterandthegypsy.com for more details.

How did your blog become so successful?  No one reads mine :(  Write about something you are passionate about.  It will show through to your readers.  Another key is to comment on other blogs.  Don’t leave a comment saying, “HEY THERE READ MY BLOG,” but make it something genuine.  Say something you liked about their post.  Advertising on other blogs is another way to get people to click over to yours.  You can always reach out to your favorite bloggers.  That’s how relationships are built.

Is it okay if I post your photos on my blog?  Yes, as long as you provide proper credit, plus a link to the original blog post.  If you are featuring a DIY project/tutorial, please use only one photo, with a link to the original blog post.

How tall are you?  5′ 2 and 3/4” (although I always round up to 5’3”).

What is your ethnicity?  I am half Chinese from my Dad.  From my mom, I am Italian, Scottish, French Canadian, and Hungarian.  I’m a mutt ;)

What kind of dog is Aubrey?  She is a German Shorthaired Pointer.

I follow your Twitter and notice you periodically post about your running.  Can you tell me more about it?  I’ve never been much of an athletic person (I’m not really one for organized team sports), but I’ve always been somewhat active (never like I am now though!).  I started running two years ago when a friend persuaded me and my mom to sign up for our first half marathon.  7 half marathons later, I am totally hooked.

Wow, that’s incredible!  What is your exercise routine?  I run 2-3 times a week. In between my run days, I swim, spin, and do Pilates.  I also do strength training at least once a week. I always do my workouts in the morning (I’ve always been a morning person).  It helps me get my day started! Lately I haven’t been running much though due to plantar fasciitis in my foot, so I’ve been spinning and swimming as my cardio instead.

Since you’re so active, what kind of food do you eat for energy?  I heard you’re a vegetarian, is that right?  Yes, that’s right.  I am a gluten-free dairy-free vegetarian. I’ve been a vegetarian for 6 years as of this January 2014.  I eat a plant-based diet consisting of fruits, veggies, and other non-processed foods. My diet is less of a diet and more of a lifestyle than anything else.

Is your family vegetarian too?  Nope, just me.  Although they don’t eat much meat.

I have a suggestion for your blog!  Is it okay if I email you my idea?  Yes, you may send me your idea for me to review, although there are no guarantees it will be implemented into my blog.  You can reach me at hello@drifterandthegypsy.com.

I sent you an email.  How long should I expect to wait for a response?  I get answer all my emails in the order they are received/importance.  Please be patient!

Who created your blog design?  A brilliant guy (and fellow SCAD student) Dylan Navajas Gluck.

What are you favorite blogs?  You can view my blog roll here.

What are your favorite stores?  Thrift shops, Crossroads, Urban Outfitters, Gap, J. Crew, and Anthropologie, amongst many others.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?  The relationships I have cultivated with like-minded individuals from around the world.  It also never ceases to amaze me how widespread the blogging community is.  Also, the opportunity to touch the lives and sensibilities of young women that I may not have otherwise met is something I truly cherish.
